The Denza B5 is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) mid-to-large rugged 4x4 SUV introduced by BYD’s premium sub-brand, Denza. Essentially an export rebadged version of the Bao 5 from BYD’s specialised off-road sub-brand Fangchengbao, the model has been integrated into the Denza portfolio for global distribution. Built on a robust ladder frame chassis with a five-seater layout, it is primarily targeted at key overseas markets including Australia, Brazil, Hong Kong, and Singapore. The vehicle is offered in two trim levels—Dynamic (Standard) and Premium/Leopard—with an entry price of AUD 74,990 (excluding on-road costs) in Australia, HKD 558,000 to HKD 628,000 (around USD 72,000 to USD 81,000) in Hong Kong, and approximately RM550,000 to RM600,000 in markets such as Brazil.
The Denza B5 inherits the "Leopard Power Aesthetics" rugged design ethos from the Fangchengbao Bao 5, complemented by subtle brand-specific tweaks tailored for global markets. Up front, it features a bespoke large rectangular front grille with a honeycomb mesh insert flanked by three bold black horizontal slats, centred by the Denza emblem. While the full-LED headlamps and fog lights retain their signature contours, the full-width LED light bar has been omitted. The front bumper integrates a substantial silver bash plate alongside functional recovery tow hooks, underlining its off-road utility. In profile, the SUV sports boxy, upright proportions, accentuated by squared-off wing mirrors, conventional pull-type door handles, and chunky flared wheel arches that not only convey a rugged stance but also provide generous wheel travel for extreme axle articulation. Around the back, it retains the iconic tailgate-mounted spare wheel and side-hinged tailgate, complete with a Denza-branded spare tyre cover and an integrated rear tow hook for enhanced off-road versatility. Measuring with the external spare wheel, the B5 spans 4,890 mm in length (4,921 mm for the range-topping trim), 1,970 mm in width, and 1,920 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,800 mm.
The cabin adopts a rugged yet high-tech aesthetic that mirrors the exterior, fitted with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 15.6-inch 2.5K HD central touchscreen, and a 12.3-inch front passenger entertainment display. This triple-screen setup is complemented by a 50-inch AR-HUD head-up display and a digital rear-view mirror to create an intelligent five-screen cockpit. Surrounding the retractable crystal gear selector, a comprehensive array of tactile physical switches is retained for essential controls including climate settings, drive modes, and differential locks, striking a practical balance between modern tech and off-road usability.
Underpinned by BYD’s DMO (Dual Mode Off-road) Super Hybrid platform, the Denza B5 is powered by a plug-in hybrid powertrain combining a 1.5-litre turbocharged high-output Xiaoyun petrol engine with dual electric motors on the front and rear axles. The petrol engine delivers 135 kW (approx. 184 PS) and 260 Nm of torque, while the dual electric motors produce a combined 485 kW (approx. 659 PS) and 760 Nm, culminating in an impressive total system output of 505 kW (approx. 687 PS). Energy is supplied by a 31.8 kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) Blade Battery, providing an all-electric range of 90 km under the WLTC cycle (rated at 100 km under NEDC in Hong Kong) and an overall combined cruising range exceeding 1,200 km. Thanks to its all-wheel-drive system, the hefty 2.94-tonne B5 completes the century sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds. The SUV supports 11 kW AC charging and 100 kW DC fast charging, achieves a combined fuel economy of approximately 9.2 km/L (10.9 L/100 km), and comes standard with a 6 kW Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) external power supply feature.
The Denza B5 rides on a heavy-duty ladder frame chassis with double-wishbone independent suspension at both the front and rear. Premium variants feature the DiSus-P Intelligent Hydraulic Body Control System, which dynamically adjusts ride height and active damping according to the selected off-road terrain mode, unlocking a maximum ground clearance of up to 310 mm and a tested water wading depth close to 900 mm. For serious off-roading, a rear mechanical differential lock and an electronic centre differential lock are standard across the range, with an optional front differential lock available, working in tandem with the full-time AWD system to provide triple-lock extreme terrain recovery capability. Key off-road geometry metrics include a 38° approach angle, a 32° departure angle, a 26° ramp breakover angle, a standard wading depth of 790 mm, and a maximum gradeability of 45°.
In terms of drive modes, the Denza B5 boasts up to 16 all-terrain driving modes (including a tank-turn pivot function) tailored for mud, sand, snow, rock, mountain, wading, and intelligent multi-terrain scenarios, alongside three tarmac drive modes: Eco, Comfort, and Sport. Both steering assist and suspension damping offer two-stage adjustment (Comfort and Sport), striking a well-judged balance between urban ride comfort and rugged off-road prowess.
Inside, the Denza B5 features premium Nappa leather upholstery throughout, with the front seats boasting power adjustment, heating, ventilation, and massage functions; the rear quarters feature a completely flat floor with reclining backrests and seat ventilation on higher-spec variants. Practicality is well catered for with up to 30 storage compartments scattered across the cabin, while the boot expands into a cavernous flat cargo bay when the rear seats are folded down.
On the comfort and convenience front, soft-close doors, a panoramic glass roof, a four-zone intelligent voice control system, multi-colour ambient lighting, and an active cabin fragrancing system are standard equipment. Audiophiles are treated to a 16-speaker Devialet premium sound system, while higher-spec trims ride on 20-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 275/55 R20 Pirelli rubber. Additional highlights include dual 50W wireless smartphone fast-charging pads (higher trim), five USB ports across both rows, and a 4.5-litre on-board refrigerator with cooling and heating capabilities (-6°C to 50°C, with up to 12 hours of delayed power-off). The digital cockpit runs on the DiLink operating system (badged as Filink overseas), featuring full-scenario voice commands, 3D vehicle control graphics, innovative triple-desktop UI switching, and multi-screen gesture controls.
The Denza B5 is engineered around a high-strength body-on-frame safety cage structure, supplemented by a comprehensive airbag array (front dual, front side, and full-length side curtain airbags). Active safety is bolstered by a standard 360-degree 3D surround-view monitor with a transparent chassis function. Compared to the domestic Fangchengbao Bao 5, the global Denza B5 has revised its driver assistance suite, omitting the "Eye of the Gods" high-level intelligent driving suite and Huawei Qiankun ADS system in favour of a baseline Level 2 ADAS setup, which retains essentials such as Full-Speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB), Lane Keeping Assist (LKA), and Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM) to comply with international regulations and regional driving environments.
As the global export iteration of the Fangchengbao Bao 5, the Denza B5 has outperformed commercial expectations across several premium international markets. In Brazil, the Denza B5 clinched the best-selling luxury vehicle spot in the capital, Brasília, in February 2026, registering over 100 deliveries in its debut month and outselling similarly priced rivals from Mercedes-Benz, BMW, and Audi. Industry observers regard this milestone as a prime case study of Chinese automakers transitioning from "value-for-money exports" to "brand-equity premium exports"—a vehicle priced at around RM200,000 in China can command over RM500,000 overseas under the Denza badge and still win market acclaim. In Singapore and Hong Kong, the Denza B5 has likewise captured substantial consumer attention on the back of its 4.8-second century sprint, DiSus-P hydraulic suspension, and triple-lock hardcore hardware. Owner feedback highlights that the SUV delivers unrivalled off-road capability in its price bracket, with its PHEV powertrain providing anxiety-free long-distance touring alongside luxury-grade refinement and reassuring warranty coverage; nonetheless, some overseas buyers have noted that the omission of advanced autonomous driving represents a slight tech downgrade compared to the domestic Chinese version.
As the flagship SUV spearheading BYD’s global premium strategy, the Denza B5 carves out a distinct competitive edge in the mid-to-large rugged PHEV SUV segment through its potent fusion of the DMO Super Hybrid platform, DiSus-P Intelligent Hydraulic Body Control System, robust ladder frame chassis, and triple-lock 4WD drivetrain. Within just two years of entering international markets, it has established itself as a benchmark export among Chinese new energy rugged 4x4s, setting a sturdy product and reputation foundation for Denza’s continued luxury electrification offensive worldwide.
